However, in the 1990s and 2000s, both countries experienced economic sluggishness and a long period of hardship. In the 2010s, however, the performance of Japan and Germany moved in different directions. As global competition intensified, German companies played a major role in leading the European economy, whereas Japanese companies continued to lose their international competitiveness.\n\nSince the era of Germany’s Schroeder administration starting at the end of the 1990s, the German government implemented policies to support various reforms, including welfare system and labor market reform, and other policy aimed at enhancing German companies' global competitiveness. However, this did not happen in Japan. Many large German companies promoted reforms to increase global competitiveness and shifted to US-style management, maintaining some German practices from the 1990s. However, Japanese companies failed to do so.
