内容記述 | The role of political autonomy in the development of countries is one of the fundamental issues in world politics. The conventional notion is that high political freedom enhances the quality of life of its citizens. Nevertheless, many contradictory findings from recent studies observe that advancements in human development are attained among authoritarian countries rather than democratic countries. In this paper, we shed new light on this problem from the viewpoint of data science and mathematical modeling. Specifically, we employ Freedom House Score (FHS)and Human Development Index (HDI)as indices of political autonomy and development of countries, respectively, and examine the trajectories of 193 countries on a two dimensional plane spanned over 33 years from 1990 to 2022 to develop a Markov model to elucidate the nuanced behavior of these two variables. The model is simple and explains surprisingly well the actual change in the distribution of the world countries on the FHSHDI plane over time. We observe that while low-developed countries tend to change their political autonomy level rather than improve their level of development, medium- and highdeveloped countries have a stronger impetus toward development than toward fluctuation in political autonomy. Also, medium- and high-developed countries show more possibility of reaching very high development for both low and high political autonomy levels. The medium political autonomy level shows an unsteady way to attain the highest development. This study suggests stable governance systems for very high development and directed action towards implementation of quality development policies for low-developed countries. | |||||||||
